Description and History

Power Station, 1896 opened by Lord Kelvin in June 1897 max output 250 kW. Shoreditch was the second authority in London to generate its own electrical power from this scheme which operated from 1891-1899. The station generated electricity from the destruction of domestic waste. To the west is the public baths using the waste water. Over the door is the motto 'E pulvere lux et vis' meaning 'light & power from dust' 'Motto' of borough also. Site had been Middlesex ironworks. The building is now occupied by the London Circus academy.

Plaque reads: 'Inaugurated 28 June 1897 by the Shoreditch Vestry, precursor of Shoreditch Borough Council. An early purpose-built undertaking to generate electricity from steam created by burning rubbish.'
