Euston Station

Description and History of Site:-
Terminus of London's first trunk line, L&BR, 1837, (LNWR from 1846) and had first overall iron roof. Entirely rebuilt 1962-6 in reinforced concrete. Two 1-storey stone entrance lodges c. 1869 on either side of station approach which leads to LMSR war memorial and site of demolished Euston Arch (monumental Doric gateway of 1838). Philip Hardwick's 72 ft' Doric Portico was demolished in 1963. Only the statue of Robert Stephenson by C. Marochetti (1870) and stone group of 'Britannia' and other figures from Great Hall (1846-9) remain from original station. Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) sculpture by Baron Carlo Marochetti, from 1871 inside Euston station, moved to present position in 1968. Statue of George Stephenson removed and now NRM York.
