Alexandra Railway Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
Substantial cast-iron piers in the river as well as the ornate ends mounted on stone abutments are the significant remains of the London Chatham & Dover Railway's bridge over the Thames. Constructed 1862-1864 by the Crumlin Ironworks to the designs of Joseph Cubbitt and F T Turner. The bridge carried the line from LCDR St Pauls Station on the south bank to Ludgate Station (closed 1929) and Snow Hill station (closed 1916) and then on to meet the Metropolitan Railway at Farringdon. The ornate ends carry the insignia of Kent, the City of London, Rochester and Dover. The lattice girderwork of the bridge was removed in June 1984.
