Crown Brewery

Description and History of Site:-
The brewery was situated behind the Manor House at Brompton on Swale started by brewing for the Crown pub next door then bought a few others. In 1920 a brother of James Fryer of Brompton on Swale bought Cleveland Brewery in Stokesley and did all the bottling for both breweries there. Crown Brewery owned the Buck and Turff pubs in Richmond. When the Crown Brewery closed in c 1958 were still malting for themselves and brewing in the old 'hand' way. Buildings of river cobbles and slate with brick details. There are 3 wells now filled in. Half of one of the vats (1 1/2 inches thick) is used as cocktail cabinet by James Fryer grandson of the last brewer who lives there now. It was a week's work to make malt. Coke used in the kiln. Malt stores of two storeys. A steeping tank stood on the ground floor fed from cast -iron tank which remains on roof. There is also a old malt -screen upstairs in the maltings. The floor of the malting is perforated. (Jane Hatcher, c1975).

Most of the site has now been redeveloped, though some buildings (not the maltkiln) have been refurbished to holiday accommodation (2019).
