Fernbeck or Thornthwaite Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Large two storey building in stone and slab, very good architecturally. Eight bays. House in two bays at one end. Strange entrance porch has been added at 3rd bay with bowed front in larger stones with pediment top. Some small paned windows x-pivoted across centre. Large imposts round openings. Loading bay on 1st floor and wide doorway at bay 5. Very wide opening on 1st floor of 6. Inside windows have splayed reveals and flat arches. Very nice corbels and kneelers at eaves, corbels in pairs lining through with imposts of windows.
The dam is now overgrown. Very large 20' diameter iron framed pitchback wheel in situ. Wheel chamber very wide compared to wheel, possibly because earlier wheel wider and lower shot. (Hatcher, 1975).
