John Smith's Brewery

Description and History of Site:-
Very like Lockwood Brewery in Huddersfield but bigger. Decorative ironwork and rusticated stone with some decoration (Hatcher, 1974). Founded in 1852 when John Smith bought the existing Backhouse & Hartley brewery on the site. This remained a fairly small operation, in 1861 employing 8 men, but the business steadily expanded. In 1879, John Smith died and his brother William built a modern brewery in 1883-4. The company expanded further in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, in part through the acquisition of other breweries and distribution companies. In 1970, John Smiths was taken over by the southern based Courage brewery group who expanded and developed the Tadcaster operation in 1974.

Several different parts and features of the brewery are listed.
