Spofforth Corn Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Hatcher noted:- Wheel chamber at far side still contains large wheel and is to be blocked in situ. Main oak drive just been removed. Large arched opening in inner wall between main building and extension was original entrance to mill. Original part well-proportioned rectangular plan typical medium sized mill. Very square window openings with monolithic lintels. Two storied plus attic. Built in delightful pinkish sandstone. Old timbers mainly oak with some pitch pine. Many old and obviously reused with carpenters numbering. Now (2017) converted to residential.

Adjacent Pack Horse Bridge at SE 36218 51522 is listed Grade II listing number 1174937

A probable mill race of post medieval date is visible as earthwork on historic and recent air photos at on the north side of Spofforth at SE3611 5158. The ditched water channel, is embanked along it southern edge and runs, with several dog leg bends, between Spofforth Corn Mill on Crimple Beck and Toad Hole Beck. Hatcher noted: inscription in cursive lettering on left jamb of original entrance "Thomas Hick 1745".
