Redcar Blast Furnace

Description and History of Site:-
Redcar Blast Furnace. The new Redcar No 1 blast furnace built for the British Steel Corporation was commissioned on 12 October of 1979. It has an overall height of 90 m the stack itself being 30 m high with a 14 m diameter hearth and 15.3 m bosh. The total working volume of 4374 cu m made it one of the largest blast furnaces in Europe. British Steel plc replaced BSC in 1988 then merged with Hoogovens in 1999 to form the Corus Group plc. Tata Steel part of the Indian Tata Group purchased Corus in 2007 but on 19 February 2010 the blast furnace was shut down an iron production on Teesside ceased. Then in February 2011 the plant was purchased by Sahaviriya Steel Industries a company from Thailand and after refurbishment of the blast furnace was blown-in on 15 April 2012.
SSI UK went into liquidation in October 2014 and the iron and steel plant was shut down forthwith making it impractical to recover. They are now derelict and the site is awaiting a redevelopment plan (July, 2016).
