Belmont Ironstone Mine

Description and History of Site:-
The remaining buildings (2015) include the workshop, stables and horse keeper's house. In the woods (NZ 6170 1435), the main drift entrance, powder house and electricity sub-station can still be seen. From 1853 to 1886 the Weardale Iron and Coal Co operated the mine from 1855 initially from surface quarries and then from a drift entrance to the east at NZ 6250 1460. In 1861 part of royalty was sub-leased to the North of England Industrial Co, as South Belmont. All production ended in 1877. In 1907 Bolckow, Vaughan Co took over the lease and opened a new drift at Hunter's Hill (NZ 6174 1435). This was productive from 1909 to 1921; the mine was then put on a care and maintenance basis. In 1929 Bolckow, Vaughan Co was taken over by Dorman Long & Co who closed the mine down in 1931.
