Skelton Park Ironstone Mine

Description and History of Site:-
Skelton Park Ironstone Mine (1872-1938). Two 380 ft (115.8 m) deep shafts; large combined winding, pumping house and boiler site, with 1872 dated on stone above lintel on north-west end; chimney base; Schiele fan house; two magazines; office and manager's house survive. On private land.
Extensive survey and remedial work being carried out currently (2016) by the Cleveland Mining Historical Society. Messrs Bell Brothers operated the mine from 1871 to 1923, then Dorman Long & Co. took it over and worked it until 1938. Most complete of all Cleveland ironstone mines.
