Grosmont Horse Tunnel

Description and History of Site:-
Grosmont Horse Tunnel, c1834. By George Stephenson for the Whitby and Pickering Railway. The tunnel, which is approximately 130 yards (110 m) long by 10ft (3.05m) wide by 14ft (4.27m) high became obsolete c1847 when superseded by a steam locomotive tunnel built alongside by the York and North Midland Railway. The engineer for the original line was Frederick Swanwick.
