Bainbridge Hydro

Description and History of Site:-
Completed in the spring of 2011 and opened by William Hague MP in May of that year. Conceived as a community project to utilise the natural fall of water in the River Bain to generate electricity. The project was funded in a variety of ways and eventually cost £450,000. The water flow drives a 26 foot long Archimedes screw (working in reverse) and generates 45 kW of power. So far (2018) the anticipated profits for the scheme have not yet materialised, partly since the very small scale of the project makes it vulnerable to variations in annual rainfall.
