High Baring

Description and History of Site:-
Remains of 5-6 bays of housing. Built on an artificial terrace above the trackways of the Rosedale East Branch of the North Eastern Railway. Provided as accommodation for workers at the Rosedale East Ironstone mines and kilns. The visible remains in 2018 seem to represent about half of the terrace shown on the OS 6" map of 1891. The exact layout is, at present, unclear but there is clear evidence of occupation over two floors, each floor provided with two fireplaces, the upper rather small, the lower more substantial. There was probably a longitudinal dividing wall rendering the dwellings 'back-to-back'.
