Victoria Works

Description and History of Site:-
Works was established in 1901. Demolished in stages between 1994 and c2014. Site redeveloped for commercial use, currently (2016) housing Pure Gym, Millhouses, and Bathstore, Sheffield. Opposite the site is the Laycocks Sports Club. William Samuel Laycock (1842-1916) from a family in the upholstery business (137 Arundel Street - qv) set up in 1880 to make upholstery window lifts and blinds for railway vehicles (not found in directories until 1893). Later added automatic couplers and other railway components and was pioneer of steam heating of carriages piped from the engine. Began this works in 1901 with its own 300Kw power station. Fitted out complete railway carriages made aircraft engines garage and car wash equipment and (1919-c1926) Charron Laycock cars. Became Laycock Engineering Company Ltd specialising in overdrives universal joints couplings and clutches for car industry and from 1940s aircraft components. First demolition left only the 1901 office block (1994). Demolished by 2014.
