Description and History of Site:-
The site has been recently (April 2019) been acquired by Ritchie Bros, auctioneers from Canada who buy and sell heavy machinery. The Maltby Main Colliery Co. Ltd, formed in 1907, sank two shafts (1908 and 1911) into the Barnsley coal seam 750m below. Coal production commenced in 1912, all coming from the Barnsley seam, and continued until 1970. By the mid 1930s, the mine was producing a million tons per year.

The Barnsley seam was worked out by 1972, but other sources were worked including Swallow Wood (1968-1993) and Haigh Moor (1978-1979). In the early 1980's, one of the original shafts was deepened to 984m and a new shaft (No3) sunk to 991m. These developments, completed in 1989, allowed the working of the 1.5m thick Parkgate seam by 1992.

After privatisation, RJB Mining which later became UK Coal Mining Ltd, continued working the Parkgate Seam which was regarded as particularly suitable for coking. In 2007 Hargreaves Services plc bought Maltby, for £21.5 million, to provide coal for its New Monckton Coke Works (SYK00003). By 2012, however, oil, water and gas seepage into a working face led to its abandonment. The colliery was closed in April 2013 and the surface plant cleared in 2014.

In July 1923, a series of small fires and explosions culminated in a violent explosion on the morning of July 28th which killed 27 men.
