Rossington Colliery

Description and History of Site:-
The site is currently (2019) mostly occupied by Amazon Logistics. Plans were announced in 2012 for a development of 1,200 homes. The two shafts at Rossington Main colliery were commenced in the summer of 1912. No. 1 reached the Barnsley seam at nearly 800 m depth (after some delays due to significant water inflow) in May 1915, No. 2 reached the seam in November 1915. The Barnsley seam was worked from July 1916 until the colliery closed. The Dunsil seam, about 14m below the Barnsley, was also worked intermittently. The mine closed briefly between 1993 and 1994 when it was re-opened by RJB Mining Ltd. The mine closed in 2006 and the site cleared and landscaped in 2007.
