Five Rise Locks

Description and History of Site:-
This dramatic lock staircase is on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Bingley; it is Grade I listed. Five Rise is believed to be the steepest set of locks on England's canal network. The lower gate of each lock forms the upper gate of the lock below. Five Rise Locks were a major engineering feat when opened in 1774. The lock staircase is still fully functional and new gates were installed in 2012. The whole canal is still navigable.
