Description and History of Site:-
In Middleton Park woods there are numerous bowl-shaped shaft mounds in the woods. These are the remains of early coal mining dating back to at the 17th century. The large majority of these mounds are set out on a regular grid pattern up to 100m apart and represent the surface remains of a style of mining known as 'multiple shaft pillar and stall mining'. There are indications that in other areas coal was extracted using 'bell-pits' where the coal seam was shallow. There are also several wagonway routes that survive as tarmac paths in the park or as earthworks.
