THE WISH WARD CISTERN
This cistern, built in the 18th century, was gravity-fed with water from Rye Hill which was supplied to the public from the slightly later hand pump next to the road. This site has been part of Rye's public water supply since the 16th century. An earlier conduit structure was controlled by 'stop cocks' or taps which were unlocked daily. Heavy fines were levied on those who picked or broke the locks or used it for washing clothes. Ryers collected their water from here in leather pails or had them delivered to their houses by men carrying two buckets on a yoke.
