Description and History of Site:-
Originally founded 1742 to augment storehouses at Tower Hill, it became Royal Victoria Yard in 1858. Most of area which originally had 36 acres of storehouses is now LB of Lewisham Pepys Estate but two tall square brick piers with stone cornices and ball finials of bricked up gateway and colonnade of 1768, probably by Samuel Wyatt, and attractive 1780s George Terrace and 1781-89 rum warehouses and superintendent's house remain, restored for other uses. In front of the Dockyard entrance on Grove Road are 4 bollards made from late 18th century cannons with balls in their mouths. They are Listed Grade II.
SELIA (1982): 'The Royal Victoria Yard was originally founded in 1742 when the storehouses on Tower Hill became insufficient for the Navy’s needs. It became the Royal Victoria Yard after a visit by the Queen in 1858. The yard originally occupied a river frontage of 1,800 ft. with storehouse cover of over 36 acres for the storage of provisions and clothing for the Navy, including rum vats, one having a capacity of 32,000 gallons. Most of the area is now the G.L.C. Pepys Estate. The remaining buildings include the gateway and colonnade of 1768, probably by Samuel Wyatt; an attractive 1780s Georgian terrace and the 1781-89 rum warehouses and superintendent’s house, the basement floor of which is now imaginatively restored as a library and the upper floors to flats.'
