Description and History of Site:-
Millstone Grit outcrops were worked by surface methods high on Gragareth to produce millstone roughouts which, as on Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent, can only have been rolled downslope for transport off the hill. Two abandoned roughouts lie partly covered by vegetation growth - one at SD6965 8030 (1.15m diameter and 0.25m thickness with a central hole) and another at SD6962 8037 (1.15m diameter and 0.59m thickness with no central hole). A simple but roofed one-person workmen's shelter lie close to both, very similar to those seen on Ingleborough. The only probable reference to this site is from the will of Thomas Greenbancke of Twisleton, dated 13 November 1632, in which he left (among other items) "...one milstonnne the pryce of wch said milstane being dyvided into Fower equall ptes ...". It is more likely that the millstone came from here than from Ingleborough.
