Lead Mine Moss

Description and History of Site:-
Lead Mine Moss (Grd Ref 1) is one of three sites consisting of shallow, linear open-cast workings and associated spoil heaps which contain traces of Barytes and Galena. At Grid Ref 2, on Green Edge, is a small working (possibly an infilled shaft) with two associated spoil heaps and a small ruinous stone structure which may have been a miners' coe or shelter. Barytes and quartz are seen on the spoil heaps. There is a third small working consisting of a shallow elongated open trench with adjacent spoil heap containing samples of Barytes and copper carbonate (Malachite) with some copper pyrites (Chalcopyrite). All were unsuccessful trial workings. In 1703 a 21-year agreement granted John Blackburn the rights to "digg, delve, trench, sink shafts, drive levels or opencasts, grave turfes for seaking and getting lead ore". Lead ore was obtained from Lead Mine Moss and assayed at Marrick smelt mill but it proved "good for nothing". A further agreement garnted Joseph Thompson the right to "try for mines of ore" for 21 years from 1835, but no details have been found.
