Description and History

Deptford Pumping Station (now known as Greenwich Pumping Station), 1859-62. First stage of Bazalgette's London Main Drainage Scheme. Lifts dry-weather flow and storm water 18 ft into Southern Outfall Sewer running to Crossness. Cast- and wrought-iron coalsheds on banks of Deptford Creek, covering 18,000 sq. ft remain. The two beam-engine houses linked by boiler house. Only South Wing (enlarged 1930-31) now used, houses vertical electric pumps, three Allen diesels and two Crossley horizontal gas engines converted to diesel, all installed 1934. Italianate station, built in light-coloured brick with darker pilasters (Allen's Ballington salmon and brimstone coloured bricks), consists of central boiler house flanked by two wings containing pumps. Adjoining in Greenwich High Rd, 377771, is electricity substation with initials L. E. S. C. (London Electricity Supply Co.)
