Fountains Abbey Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Stone building with five bays. The only 12th century Cistercian watermill remaining in Britain. The mill was used to generate electricity using a turbo-generator from the early 20th century. The installation was upgraded in 1928 to provide lighting power to Fountains Hall and after renovation in the 1990s still provides, in part, lighting for the mill. Mid C12, remodelled late C12 and again early C13; altered post 1539 and C19. Gritstone, stone slate roof. 3 storeys, 5 bays, with lower 2-storey, 2-bay addition to north.
