Holgate Windmill

Description and History of Site:-
Tower mill of five storeys. Painted with black bitumen. Batters up to waist at level of 3rd stage and finishes vertically with a six-course corbelled section. Rounded cap is covered with steel plates on wooden cap spars with a ball finial (Hatcher, 1973).

Holgate Windmill, the last surviving windmill in England to feature five double-shuttered sails has been restored. It took 10 years and at a cost of £550,000, the restoration was completed in 2011. Wind-powered corn mill built between 1770 and 1792 on a site occupied by windmills since the C15. Milling ceased in 1939. Restoration by the windmill's trust began in 2001 and was completed in 2011. Flour is produced for sale to visitors.
