Northallerton Linoleum Manufacturing Company

Description and History of Site:-
This large urban site was totally redeveloped early in the 21st century and is now occupied by a medical practice and modern housing.

The site was visited by Jane Hatcher on the 4th April 1974 who noted:-
Huge works in brick and slate large-scale. According to an elderly local resident was a lino factory. Tall semi-circular headed windows spanning first and second floors. Shorter windows on top floors medium-sized on ground-floor . In the 1860s, George Elliott MP set up this factory to produce tarpaulin, sackcloth & brattice cloth with 100 men, several of whom were imported from a similar enterprise in Kirkcaldy. It occupied a large site between Malpas and Romanby Roads and was extended in 1890 to include linoleum manufacture. By 1920, it was owned by Miles Sykes and employed 320 people, all of whom lost their jobs when the business was closed in 1938.
