Description and History

Cast-iron Doric colonnade bridges at Abbey St., SE1 (339794) and Spa Rd. (qv), both Grade II. Spa Rd. in use first; therefore London's oldest operational railway bridge. Much widened viaduct of LGR, still carries mainline services into London Bridge. Original viaduct of 878 arches, still world's largest brick structure, designed by Col. Landmann to minimise land purchase. Line opened from Deptford to Spa Road Bermondsey on 8 February 1836. Extended to London Bridge in December and again, via lift bridge over Deptford Creek, to Greenwich, 24 December 1838.
