Description and History

Opened 1807, engineer Ralph Dodd, ran three miles from Greenland Dock in Surrey Commercial Docks, 361790, to Camberwell. Branch (1.5 miles) ran from Glengall Rd, 339777, to Peckham, 341768, opened 1826. Northern part of canal in Surrey Commercial Docks was progressively converted to dock use; latterly canal carried on timber trade to yards along its bank, some remain, though canal closed 1971 and filled in. Route went from Plough Bridge, Plough Way, 363789, turning south-westward at Evelyn St to pass under Trundleys Rd, site of canal office, to leave Borough of Lewisham at Canterbury Bridge, Ilderton Rd, 353780. Just to east alongside railway line near Coldblow Lane, 356779, the Croydon Canal made a right angle junction, a small section survived within the Key Glassworks until ca.1980.
