Description and History

Anchor Brewery founded 1787 by John Courage. Brewing started 1789. Occupied buildings on riverfront (main brewhouse) and south of Shad Thames (fermenting room, cooperage and offices). Interesting riverside buildings mainly postdate fire of May 1891. Chimney dated 1895. Brewing ceased 1981, and site being redeveloped as some of London's most expensive housing.

All the time it was operating it was possible to smell the hops when going south over Tower Bridge. Also look over the side to see James & Co loading its special tippers with spent grain to go for animal feed. - Robert Mason - 26 April 2022
