Description and History

Site derived name from having been tide mill on river Neckinger. Neckinger Mill rebuilt 1780 by Matthias Coops becoming first mill to make paper from straw. (Barton: Lost Rivers). 1800 mill used for leather manufacture by Bevington family. This family became notable locally; 1880 Col. S. B. Bevington first mayor of Bermondsey.
