Rippon Bros Works - Huddersfield
Bentley 3½ litre, 2-door saloon, 1935.
Built by Rippon for Herbert Hey, born Bradford, 1882. Established H Hey & Co Ltd, worsted spinners, Keighley in 1903. He became chairman of H B Priestman & Co Ltd, Bradford, worsted spinners, and a director of Salts (Saltaire) Ltd. He was president of Bradford Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the National Wool Textile Export Group and a director of Barclay’s Bank, Bradford. He died in 1942.
Herbert’s father, Joseph Hey, founded J Hey & Co Ltd, Northbrook Brewery, Wilson Square Lumb Lane, Bradford, c1880. They built up an estate of 73 pubs. Herbert’s elder brother, Lancaster Hey, joined the business, becoming a director. His son, Walter Lancaster, also joined the business, becoming chairman. He bought a Rippon-bodied Bentley 4¼ saloon in 1936. He became president of Samuel Webster & Sons Ltd in 1966 when they took over Hey’s. Northbrook brewery closed in 1967.
