Marshall's Britannia Ironworks

Description and History of Site:-

In 1842 William Marshall purchased the defunct engineering works of William Garland and Son at Back Street Foundry in Gainsborough and in 1849 renamed the works as 'Britannia Ironworks' and commenced production of road steam engines. From 1861 focused on steam engineering and in particular portable engines of all sizes, traction engines, stationary engines, and boilers. They also built several railway locomotives. After some difficulties in the early 1930s the ownership of the company changed hands several times becoming Marshalls, Sons and Co (Successors) Ltd in 1936. In 1947 the company merged with John Fowler and Co Ltd of Leeds (WYK01405) becoming Marshall, Sons and Fowler. The Marshall-Fowler operation was acquired by British Leyland and the factory closed in the 1970s and the site has now been redeveloped as a shopping centre, several of the buildings having been reused.
