Automatic Standard Screw Co. Ltd.

Description and History of Site:-
Decorative, two storeyed, corner office block and warehouse with basement level, erected to an L-shaped plan. The building has been sympathetically updated for modern use by an insurance firm, retaining an elaborate entrance surround and its original date stone of 1897; whilst a new staircase has been incorporated within the glazed entrance bay of the former warehouse. The Automatic Standard Screw Company was created around the year 1896 by Simeon Crawshaw from an existing screw manufacturing business located on a site in Dispensary Walk (SE 09659 25180) see WYK00777. Within a couple of years a new warehouse and offices were needed, and plans to the designs of Messrs. Jackson and Fox, architects were submitted for a building at the junction of Charles Street and Causeway. The site had previously been occupied by a lodging house and a beer house. Both of the screw company's buildings remained in their original use until 1993, and following the closure of the company, the former office and warehouse building was converted for use by a firm of insurance brokers.
