Mill House, Jack Bridge, Blackshaw Head

Description and History of Site:-
Site of a steam powered cotton mill, originally constructed in 1861 on the North side of Colden Water, but now demolished. The extant building to the South side bears the date stone 1919 on the centre of its three gables.

Jack Bridge Mill was the last to be built in the Colden Valley. It was powered by steam and originally traded as “The Colden Cotton and Commercial Company”. In 1885 there was a disastrous fire and the mill was rebuilt. By 1893 it traded as “The Colden & Hebden Cotton Spinners and Weavers” and by 1893 became “The Colden Manufacturing Company”. It continued to be used by various other companies for cotton manufacturing until production ceased in 1957. The premises were then occupied by D.E. Stuttard Ltd., Engineers and later acquired by Moderna Blankets of Mytholmroyd in 1961 for use as a warehouse. It was not used following a fire in May 1969 which severely damaged the main mill building. The mill remains were then owned by a demolition contractor, but were not demolished until about 1980, leaving only the 1919 extension, which has been converted for residential use. New residential buildings now occupy the old mill site.
