Description and History of Site:-
Marshall & Davies-Shiel (1969): 'Low Mill, built in 1805 by the Ireland brothers. Woollens, snuff, carding, card-wire drawing and foundry work were all carried on here in the early 19th century. The present building is now a warehouse for the K Shoes works.'


Industrial History of Cumbria online guide: 'Low Mills or Wattsfield Mills. Advertised in 1805 as "three water wheels, with six subsidiary mills and two fulling stocks, one carding engine, eight friezing engines etc.". Bought by John & Thomas Ireland for horse clothing and collar checks. Part used by Caleb Metcalf & Sons - woollen manufacturers - by 1848. Burned down 1891 but in use again by Richardson & Co - woollen manufacturers and woollen yarn spinners - from c.1900 to 1924.'
