Description and History of Site:-
A two span skew bridge (Network Rail reference SPC 6/20) carrying the Derby-Leicester railway line over the Erewash Canal and a farm track running parallel to the canal. The eastern span over the farm track is a stone arch. The western span over the canal and towpath is a steel plate girder, with a lattice steel walkway on the southern side.
Built between 1837-40 to the designs of Charles Vignoles for the Midland Counties Railway. The span over the canal was originally a cast iron arch, but was reconstructed by the Midland Railway in 1848 and again in 1905. The walkway on the south side was added in the late C19 to provide a pedestrian route from Sawley Junction station to the Midland Railway Sheet Stores.
