Description and History of Site:-
Accommodation footbridge over the main line of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, 1857 by John Harris of the Hopetown Foundry, Darlington, with the two spans added 1868-1869.
This bridge started off as a small bridge that a farmer used to move cows across the railway safely. As the sidings got bigger so did the bridge, and it was extended three times. The oldest piece is the northernmost and the newest on the southern end.
The bridge has recently been repaired to allow people to cross the tracks underneath safely again, like the farmer and cows did almost 150 years ago.
Maker's plates read: ‘HARRIS * MDCCCLVII * MAKER’.
