Brusselton Accommodation Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
Railway accommodation bridge, 1832-1833, designed by Thomas Storey, built by John Carter for the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

A very early railway bridge from the pioneering phase of the development of railway technology.

Falconer (1980): 'A fine masonry bridge of c 1825 carries the Brusselton Incline of the Stockton & Darlington Railway over the former access to a farm. The embankment still retains many stone sleeper blocks in situ.'

Atkinson (1974): 'A small farm-access bridge, forming part of the original Stockton & Darlington Railway to the west of Shildon, may be seen near Low West Thickley Farm. Adjoining this bridge was a somewhat larger road bridge, demolished in order to widen the road. This small bridge is now preserved as a structure of historical interest.'
