Wansford Textile Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Site of former extensive multi-storey Carpet Factory owned by Sir Christopher Sykes of Sledmere House. The mill was sited between, the River Hull and Driffield Navigation measuring 80ft (24.38m) by 30ft (9.14m) and employed up to 400 men, women and children.

Work started on the mill in 1789 when iron was bought from Kirkstall Forge by Bainton, Boyes & Co. The mill was finished in 1790 and managed by Thomas Bainton, Christopher Bainton and John Boyes.

They were cotton and worsted manufactures, and insured the mill for £2,500, the weaving shop for £3,000 and the stock in their warehouse for £2,000, but his main product appears to have been carpets.

Although carpet production is reported to have ceased in 1820 John Boyes Jnr was still spinning cotton at Wansford in 1822.

The main mill building was demolished in the early 20C, but some ancillary buildings survive.

Wokers housing was provided at The Row and Ireland Square opposite the church
