Description and History of Site:-
Built by L&BR in 1837, this 1 in 68 to 1 in 77 incline from Euston Station was needed to cross the Regent's Canal. Originally cable-hauled until 1844; vaults for the two 60 hp winding engines remain beneath tracks north of canal bridge with cast-iron railings of 1837 (see Camden Town). Locomotives, which were housed in the Roundhouse were then attached. Widened 1901-6 with massive blue brick retaining walls and dive-under tunnels.
