Bromley-by-Bow Gas Works

Description and History of Site:-
Former Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks. Very fine set of seven late 19th century gas holders, originally nine. Gasworks owned by Imperial Gaslight & Coke Co. Nearby is Entrance Lock to Gasworks Dock with vertical lift gates, TQ386818, which served gasworks. The nearby Gas Company War Memorial is also listed (1392547).

Site previously included the North Thames Gas collection of historic artefacts and equipment including remains of Salisbury Town Gas Works and gas engine from Shad Thames Pumping Station.

Sturt (1980): 'This was the Imperial Gas Light & Coke Co's largest works, opened in 1870, and acquired by the Gas Light and Coke Co in 1876. The very fine group of eight large-diameter multi-column holders was built between 1873 and 1876; geographically in West Ham.'
