Description and History of Site:-
Main building (Station A) constructed 1865-8 as part of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's main drainage scheme. Central building of cruciform shape originally housed 8 beam engines and built in Venetian Gothic style with splendid cast-ironwork manufactured by Rothwell & Co of Bolton. Building designed by Bazalgette & Cooper, the architect was Charles Driver. Beam engines and boilers removed 1931-33, replaced by current 8 centrifugal electric pumps. At start of WWII the impressive chimneys were reduced to their bases. Station B built 1891-96, re-engined 1934 and 1972. Station C built 1910-14. Until 1972 contained gas-engines, now replaced with diesels driving centrifugal pumps for stormwater. Station D built 1970-71. Overall, station drains some 52 sq. miles with total capacity of 3, 410, 000 cu. m/day.
