Description and History of Site:-
Between Abbey Road and River Roding is a malt kiln, one of two, behind a two- and three-storey stock brick range of pier-and-panel construction and C20th? date. At right angles is another three storey range which may have contained the malting floors. Immediately to the south is a C19th (four?) storey brick granary/mill with engine house and chimney and windows with cast-iron frames and segmental heads. The two storey masonry riverside building, c1860s, and the five storey brick building, late 19th century, were constructed for the Essex malt roasting firm of Randells, Howell & Co. The single pyramidal style kiln and adjacent buildings are early 20th-century additions. The building were later, c 1940s, taken over by Ferguson Edwards Ltd., and converted to paint manufacture.
The five-storey building is now used for storage, but others have been empty since the early 1990s and prone to vandalism.
In Feb 2001, a fire destroyed the kiln and adjacent building. Long held plans to convert the buildings to 'cultural business unit' have so far come to nothing.
