Description and History of Site:-
Opened 1886, as National Agricultural Hall, architect H. E. Coe and J. Edmeston, structural engineers: A. T. Walmisley and M. Ende.
Ironwork fabricated and erected by Handyside of Derby. Then as now spectacular exhibition space covering 2.5 acres. 170 ft. main span wrought-iron and glass roof with lattice arch ribs and bracing frame.
Variety of uses: Ideal Home Exhibition, International Horse Shows, etc. At turn of century used by Barnum and Bailey's Circus, later by Bertram Mills Circus.
Exhibition space extended by opening, 1923, of National Hall, faced in soft red brick with freestone dressing.
1929 Joseph Emberton's ugly concrete-framed Empire Hall opened on Hammersmith Rd frontage. At rear of site is car park block with facade of 'moderne' yellow brickwork alternating with metal-framed windows.
