Description and History of Site:-
A vent pipe listed Grade II in 1995 stands at the top of Clifton Rise. It dates from 1897 and was originally installed over public conveniences close by as a vent pipe. Foul gases were burnt off at the top of the pipe.
It was installed by George Jennings, the sanitary engineer for the Greenwich District Board of Works. The design is unusual in that it was originally the work of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson for decorating his Egyptian Halls in Glasgow. As they were erected without permission they were demolished in 1871.
Macfarlane, the Glasgow ironfounders, had the design in their pattern book and so this vent and the one at New Cross Gate (qv) are the only two pieces of Thomson design in England as they are apparently the only two installed.
