Description and History of Site:-
Cinema (the first permanent cinema in South Norwood) purpose-built in 1910 with 529 seats - there is a distinctive turret / open balcony below a cupola - renamed the Rex in 1950s - closed 1956 - by 1989 operated as 'The Portland Room' for wedding receptions, Rotary Club lunches and so forth - externally still recognisable as a cinema.
Currently (04/2003) numbered 114 Portland Road, and occupied by the Discount Furniture Centre. Proposals announced (August 2003) for the conversion of the building for use as a 'Fame Academy' for dance and drama.
Converted to luxury flats 2008-09.
