Description and History of Site:-
Railway cutting initially made by the London & Croydon Railway (opened 1839) through a spur of London Clay projecting from the Norwood hills - subsequently widened - the railway departs from the Croydon Canal alignment here, taking this short cut whereas the canal had followed a circuitous 'contour' route to avoid expensive locks or earthworks.
