Description and History of Site:-
Railway tunnel 1 mile 381 yards (the longest main line railway tunnel in the London area) built for the London Chatham & Dover Railway 1857-61 - the west portal is in LB Southwark and the east portal in LB Bromley - the tunnel also passes below a small part of LB Lewisham - it is double track brick-lined through London Clay - width 24 feet 6 inches - height about 21 feet - there are two spoil extraction shafts of 66 feet and 129 feet depth.
