Polytechnic Buildings

Description and History of Site:-
One and two-storey brick buildings opened for the Croydon Polytechnic in September 1896 - variously occupied by Croydon Polytechnic / Croydon Technical College / Croydon School of Building / Croydon Secondary Technical School etc - currently (03/2003) occupied by the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Youth Centre.

'CROYDON COUNTY POLYTECHNIC SOUTH NORWOOD BRANCH' and Croydon Borough coat of arms and date 1902 on Selhurst Road frontage.

The South Norwood branch of the Polytechnic operated elsewhere in temporary buildings before 1896.

The formerly attached but separately occupied South Norwood Public Library (qv) building on the corner of Lawrence Road has been demolished and replaced by a modern public library building opened in 1980.
