Description and History of Site:-
Railway station. 1868-9 for the London South-Western Railway.

The footbridge is an early and rare British example of reinforced concrete, using a method pioneered by the French engineer François Hennebique. The bridge is remarkable for its high sides and for the curious projections extending over the railway lines. Both features were designed to protect pedestrians from the dirt of the railway's steam engines.

Note the refreshment pavilion, contemporary with the station house, provided for visitors to the Royal Botanic Gardens (qv). The station is little altered since it was opened and, together with the parades of shops in the approach roads on each side of the line, forms a delightful area of outer-suburban townscape. (cf. The only other extant (but mutilated) original building of the Kensington and Richmond Railway - the booking hall, formerly the station house at Turnham Green (now District Line)).

Information panel:

Kew Gardens station opened on 1 January 1869. It was constructed by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) as part of a route linking Richmond to Shepherd's Bush. The District Railway, Metropolitan Railway, North London Railway, and the Great Western Railway all called at the station from the 1870s to the early 1900s. In 1905, the District Railway electrified the tracks at the station so that its new trains services could run along the line, although other companies kept running steam service at the station until 1916.
